We had breakfast at Starbucks this morning. There are 2 doors on the outside. The door to the left is labeled "Singles Entrance." That door is for men. The door on the right says "Family Entrance." That door is for men who are with women and children. Inside, the Starbucks is divided in half so that you can't see the other half. Upstairs is the family sitting room where we took our food and ate. When the worker handed Mark his cup of coffee, it was an empty cup. He was joking with us. He thought that was very funny! Starbucks came to Saudi Arabia 10 years ago. When they first came, Saudi Arabia did not allow Starbucks to use the mermaid logo because it was a picture of a woman. They had a special logo that was waves with a boat on it. Two years later they allowed Starbucks to start using the mermaid logo here.
After breakfast we drove around Jeddah some and then we went to Uncle Marv's office. The building is the tallest building in Jeddah. The building has 36 floors. Uncle Marv's office is on the 25th floor. I got some really good pictures. I told Mark I might get my pictures confused between the ones from the airplane landing and Uncle Marv's office. We also met Moe's cousin, Sarah, at the office. She is a little older than Katie. She went to college in the United States (as did Uncle Marv) and she lives at the house where Katie and Moe live. She works for the same company as Uncle Marv and Moe.
After leaving the office, we drove about 45 minutes to one of the two Red Sea beaches that Katie and Moe go to. All of the beaches are private and you buy memberships to the area of your choice. The two beaches that Katie and Moe go to allow women to wear swimsuits. So we wore our abayas until we parked the car, took our abayas off and left them in the car, and then put them back on when we got in the car to leave. The beach was gorgeous, with aqua blue water, a man made island with palm trees and lots of palm trees on the beach. The water was slightly cool and clear. When I was in up to my shoulders, I could still barely see my feet. There were hardly any waves. Moe said that that is because the Red Sea is so narrow that there is not enough room for big waves to develop. (The Red Sea is 200 miles at its widest.) We only saw a few fish and they were not scary. I stayed in the water longer than I have since I was a kid. I wasn't afraid of fish or sharks or seaweed wrapping around my feet pretending to be fish. (There was VERY little seaweed.)
After leaving the beach, we drove back to Jeddah and got lunch at Moe's favorite fast food restaurant, Al Baik. That loosely translates to Mr. Chicken. They have fried chicken on the bone, fried chicken nuggets and fried shrimp. We took it back to Uncle Marv's house to eat and it was very good. Al Baik competes with Kentucky Fried Chicken here. Al Baik is only located on the west coast of Saudi Arabia. Two princes own the Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise in Saudi Arabia. They told Al Baik that they could expand but they would have to give a percentage of sales to the princes. Al Baik said there were doing fine and just stayed on the west coast.
Meals here are at odd times because it is so hot. We had lunch at about 4:30 or 5:00. We are going out to dinner at 9:00.
